Candidates’ Not Very Surprising Price Gaffe

Candidates running for election to the Western Plains Press Council have drawn comparisons with Marie Antoinette after failing a simple values test. The candidates correctly put the cost of lunch (with wine) at a good restaurant at around $500 a head, and the cost of a Western Plains politician at around $1500, but all failed to identify whether the life of a refugee fleeing persecution was worth more than a brief mention on the back pages. Asked whether the life of a black teenager was worth more than a chocolate pastry, one candidate joked, “I’m not sure, I haven’t bought one recently.”

Listeners to the Western Plains Podcasting Service are reportedly incredulous that journalists think this is much less important than whether politicians know the price of a litre of petrol. “I am astonished,” said one, “They are completely in tune with life here in remote Australia.”
